Together, We Make a Difference

The Shirley B. Montague Legacy Foundation was created in honor of my mother, Shirley B. Montague — a woman whose life reflected faith, compassion, strength, and service to others. She loved God deeply, cherished her family and church community, and devoted herself to the children and families she served through Knoxville-Knox County Head Start.

My mother had a heart for people in need, especially children. She often went beyond her responsibilities to make sure the children in her classroom had what they needed. Whether it was purchasing supplies, clothing, food, or offering encouragement, she never hesitated to use her own resources to help a child or family facing hardship. She believed that kindness, love, and compassion could make a lasting difference in someone's life.

Growing up, I witnessed her strength and sacrifice firsthand. There were times when my mother worked two jobs to ensure I had everything I needed. Like many families, we also experienced moments when help from others was necessary. Those acts of kindness were never forgotten. Instead, they became part of the foundation of who she was and how she chose to live her life.

Over time, God blessed my mother with the opportunity to give back to others, and she faithfully paid forward the love, generosity, and support she had once received. More importantly, she instilled those same values in me — teaching me the importance of faith, compassion, service, and helping others with dignity and love.

Today, the Shirley B. Montague Legacy Foundation continues her mission and carries her legacy forward by providing help, hope, support, and compassion to individuals and families in need. Through community outreach, encouragement, and acts of service, we strive to honor her life by making a meaningful difference in the lives of others — just as she did every single day.

Her legacy lives on through every life touched, every act of kindness shared, and every heart reminded that they are not alone.
